Treatment Goals

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy effectively treats varicose and spider veins. It’s often considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades.

After sclerotherapy, treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks, although occasionally it may take a month or more to see the full results. In some instances, several sclerotherapy treatments may be needed.

The Procedure

No anesthesia is required. The provider traces the spider veins with the laser beam, which injures the internal lining of the tiny blood vessels. This injury causes the vessels to disappear. Usually, multiple treatments are necessary for complete clearing of spider veins.

Recovery

The treated skin is red for 3-4 hours following the procedure. Some patients develop purple dots or blisters, which clear in two to three weeks.

The suitability of laser treatment of spider veins is determined during the office consultation. All procedures have risks. Minor complications occur occasionally. Major complications are quite unusual.

FAQ’s

Individuals, both women and men, who have visible spider veins on their faces are good candidates for treatment, which can effectively minimize or eliminate these veins.

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure involving the injection of a solution into the spider or small varicose veins to collapse them. It redirects blood flow to healthier veins. The treated vein then fades over time as the solution is absorbed by the body.

The laser treatment for spider veins involves tracing the veins with a laser beam. The beam damages the internal lining of the vessels, which eventually collapses and disappears. Multiple sessions are often required for complete removal.

Sclerotherapy and laser treatments do not require anesthesia. The procedures are relatively quick, and patients can return to normal activities shortly afterward. In sclerotherapy, the solution is injected directly into the veins, while in laser treatment, a laser beam is used to treat the veins.

Post-treatment, the skin may be red for a few hours. Some patients may experience purple dots or blisters that generally clear within two to three weeks. Usually, treated veins fade within a few weeks, but in some cases, it may take a month or more to achieve full results.

The number of treatments required can vary. Some spider veins may disappear after a single session, but multiple treatments are typically needed for complete clearance, especially for extensive or stubborn veins.
