What to Expect at your Consultation

Dr. Perrotta, Dr. Luppens and Dr. Kerestes will devote as much time as necessary to discuss your individual goals and needs with you. After a focused physical examination, your surgeon will provide preliminary recommendations and explain what you can expect from surgery.

Once your surgeon determines his surgical plan, our aesthetic coordinator will produce a written quote, which lists all costs of your proposed surgery so that there are no surprises. At that time, an appointment is set for your pre-op visit.

Pre-Op Visit

Much is covered during your pre-op visit. First, one of our highly trained medical assistants will take pre-op photos. Next, your surgeon will explain the surgical technique to you and thoroughly inform you as to what you can expect, including any potential complications. Note that all procedures involve some risk, but major complications are rare. Dr. Perrotta, Dr. Luppens and Dr. Kerestes will then obtain a more complete medical history from you and perform a final pre-op physical examination, including a check of your vital functions to ensure that you are physically fit for surgery. All informed consents for surgery will be filled out at this appointment and final payments are due at this time.  You will be notified 24 hours prior to your surgery with your arrival time.

The Upper Eyelid Lift Procedure

Dr. Perrotta, Dr. Luppens are a board-certified plastic surgeons who offer upper eyelid surgery with a local anesthetic alone or along with IV sedation. After your surgeon makes the incisions in the natural creases of the eyelid, excess skin and any bulging fat is removed. He then closes the incisions with fine nylon sutures.

As a patient of Peninsula Plastic Surgery, you have the luxury of undergoing surgery in the most private and convenient of settings – the operating room suite located inside our Salisbury office complex. This operating room has the distinction of being fully accredited by AAAHC and certified by Medicare.

Post-Op Recovery

You can go home the same day wearing the dressings and the elastic garment. Any initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral pain medication. Swelling and bruising subsides within 2-3 weeks, and you should be able to return to work and other activities within two weeks after your surgery.

Sutures either dissolve on their own or may need to be removed in 3-5 days during a post-operative visit. After your procedure, you will follow up with us several times so that we can monitor your healing.

Health Insurance

If the procedure is considered cosmetic, it is not covered by insurance. In that case, you are responsible for payment. If we perform the surgery to improve your vision, however, your insurance might cover the costs.

Lower Eyelid Lift

Dr. Perrotta, Dr. Luppens and Dr. Kerestes are experienced in state-of-the-art lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) techniques that provide a natural-looking lower eyelid lift and remove bags and excess skin under the eyes. Incisions are placed in the natural creases of the eye where scars are hidden.

If you only have bulging fat under the eyes, the fat may be removed through an incision inside the lower eyelids with no external incision. This procedure is called transconjunctival blepharoplasty.

The Lower Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Perrotta, Dr. Luppens, and Dr. Kerestes usually perform the operation on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia with or without IV sedation. Selected patients can use general anesthesia. Your surgeon places the incisions where the natural creases of the lower eyelids occur, and he then removes the excess skin and fat. If needed, he also tightens the muscle and/or the eyelid itself.

Note that a lower eyelid lift will not remove or erase all lines and wrinkles around the eyes, but it will soften them.

Post-Op Recovery

You will be asked to use ice packs and to keep your head elevated for the first 48 hours after surgery. All stitches are usually removed within 3-7 days. Any initial mild discomfort is controlled with oral medications. Bruising and sensitivity to light last a week or two. Swelling progressively disappears over several weeks.

You can wear eye makeup shortly after the sutures have been removed. Contact lenses can be worn when comfortable, usually within 7-10 days. After your procedure, you will follow up with us several times so that we can monitor your healing.

Health Insurance

Lower blepharoplasty is considered cosmetic, so insurance does not usually cover it.
