Neurotoxins

When wanting to treat fine lines and wrinkles, Peninsula Plastic Surgery offers several options of neurotoxin or botulinum toxin A, catering to each individual patient’s preference. Botox® Cosmetic is the most well-known brand name for a type of botulinum toxin (type A), however equally effective are Dysport, Jeuveau, Daxxify and Xeomin. When injected in small doses into specific facial muscles, the neurotoxin acts as a muscle relaxant, thereby minimizing the appearance of certain facial wrinkles.

Goals Of Injectables

Results can be seen in as little as 3 days and usually last 3-5 months. Patients state that, after undergoing multiple sessions of neurotoxin, their results tend to last longer than 6 months.

Side effects are few, rare and minimal. Some patients experience mild bruising at the injection site. Unwanted muscle weakness, eyelid weakness and allergic reactions are all rare potential complications.

FAQ’s

Neurotoxin injections are good candidates for individuals looking to reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. They’re also suitable for people suffering from severe hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) not relieved by regular antiperspirants.

Initial results are typically noticeable within 2 to 4 days after treatment, with full effects evident within two weeks. For hyperhidrosis treatment, dryness usually lasts from 4 to 12 months.

The effects of neurotoxins on facial wrinkles can last approximately 3 to 4 months, after which treatments must be repeated. For hyperhidrosis, the results can last from 4 to 12 months.

No specific preparation is required before receiving neurotoxin injections. However, if patients are concerned about discomfort, they may request a numbing cream before the procedure. After treatment, avoiding massaging or applying pressure to the treated areas for a few days is advisable to prevent the toxin from spreading to unintended muscles.

Neurotoxin injections do not require significant downtime, allowing most individuals to resume normal activities immediately. Side effects may include temporary bruising, swelling at the injection site, and, less commonly, headache. Most of these effects are mild and quickly disappear.

During the procedure, a fine needle injects small doses of neurotoxin into specific facial muscles. The entire process is relatively fast and typically only takes a few minutes. Neurotoxins temporarily relax muscles, helping to smooth out wrinkles and prevent the formation of new ones. For hyperhidrosis, injections are made into the underarm area to reduce excessive sweating. Follow-up treatments are necessary as the effects wear off over time.
